What is the best budget gaming CPU?

The AMD Ryzen 5 7500X3D is the best budget gaming CPU, at £229.00 on Amazon UK at the time of writing (September 2026). It is the cheapest 3D V-Cache chip, with 6 Zen 4 cores, 12 threads, a 4.5 GHz boost and 96 MB of L3 cache, and TechSpot measured it 10% faster than the Ryzen 5 9600X and 11% slower than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

  • Core Ultra 5 250K Plus (£214.99): 73.3% in Tom's Hardware's hierarchy at £2.93 per point, with 18 cores for multitasking. TechSpot measured it 2 to 3% faster than the Ryzen 5 9600X, against 10% for the 7500X3D, and LGA1851 is reported to end with this generation.
  • Core i5-14400F (£148.97): the DDR4 route and the lowest cost per point in this guide, £2.57. 32 GB of DDR4-3200 costs £220.00 less than DDR5-6000, but Tom's Hardware (28 July 2026) measured DDR4 costing LGA1700 chips 11 to 14% of gaming performance on average.

What a budget platform costs on Amazon UK (September 2026):

The 32 GB Ryzen 5 7500X3D route costs £383.03 more than the Intel DDR4 route, and it keeps the AM5 upgrade path AMD supports through 2029. TechSpot's January 2026 memory test found 16 GB matched 32 GB in 12 of 13 games, so the £626.44 build is a sound stopgap.

Does the CPU matter at 1440p and 4K?

Less than at 1080p, but it never stops mattering. TechPowerUp, testing with an RTX 5090 in its Core Ultra 7 270K Plus review, measured the lead of the fastest X3D chip in that test, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, over the six-core Ryzen 5 9600X shrinking as resolution rises.

TechSpot's May 2026 analysis shows where the gap comes back:

  • Upscaling: 1440p with DLSS Quality renders internally at 960p, so CPU differences return.
  • Lower settings: in Marvel Rivals at native 1440p, the 9800X3D led the Ryzen 7 5800X3D by 6% at Ultra and 27% at Medium.
  • CPU-heavy games:Space Marine 2, Baldur's Gate 3 and Assetto Corsa Competizione show 1440p results close to 1080p.

For a 4K gamer on a mid-range card, spare budget does more on the graphics card; the best graphics card UK 2026 guide ranks them by price per 1440p frame.

Which CPU suits an RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT?

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the best match for an RTX 5070 or Radeon RX 9070 XT, and a Ryzen 5 7500X3D or Core Ultra 5 250K Plus is enough for native 1440p at high settings. No 2026 test pairs a range of CPUs with an RTX 5070, so this is Compare Electronic's inference from the RTX 5090 data: a slower card narrows native-resolution gaps, so the 14% spread at 1440p above is a ceiling. TechSpot's Spider-Man 2 ray tracing test is the counterpoint: any card rendering more than 70 fps there, RTX 5070 Ti included, leaves the game "completely CPU limited".

The ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC costs £668.99, so with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D the pair costs £967.99; the Ryzen 7 9850X3D adds £83.99 for gains a mid-range card mostly hides. The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5070 Eagle OC SFF costs £718.99; the two cards go head to head in RTX 5070 vs RX 9070 XT.

AM5 or LGA1851: which platform lasts longer?

AM5 lasts longer. AMD extended AM5 support "through 2029" at Computex 2026. Intel's LGA1851 is reported to end with the Core Ultra 200S Plus: leaks reported by Tom's Hardware on 3 September 2026 put Nova Lake (Core Ultra 400) on a new LGA1954 socket, with the first unlocked chips in Q1 2027. Intel has not confirmed a date.

  • Zen 6: not formally announced. Data-mined AMD documents list Olympic Ridge desktop chips under AM5 (TechSpot, 27 August 2026); a desktop delay to 2027 is rumoured.
  • Ryzen 5 9600X3D:not launched. AMD said at Computex 2026 that a six-core Zen 5 X3D chip "may be something that we look at doing".
  • LGA1700: no upgrade path beyond 14th-gen chips, but it still takes DDR4.

AM5 is worth it in 2026 for any new build. The MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi (£229.99) and ASUS TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi (£189.00) have BIOS Flashback, which updates the BIOS with no CPU or RAM fitted, ready for a future chip.

What about AM4 owners?

AM4 owners should upgrade the graphics card first and move to AM5 only if the CPU still limits frame rates afterwards. A platform swap is expensive: the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, MSI PRO B650M-A WiFi (£151.45) and Patriot 32 GB DDR5-6000 kit total £880.44 at Amazon UK prices in September 2026.

  • TechSpot measured the Ryzen 7 7800X3D 20 to 24% faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD's top AM4 gaming chip, and the Ryzen 5 7500X3D 8 to 9% faster.
  • The same £880.44 covers an ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC at £668.99 with £211.45 to spare.
  • AMD re-released the Ryzen 7 5800X3D as the 10th Anniversary Edition on 25 June 2026 at $349; TechSpot found performance identical to the 2022 original and level with the Ryzen 5 9600X on a 13-game average.
  • The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is end of life, according to Tom's Hardware (August 2025).

Owners weighing a CPU swap on AM4 should check the board maker's CPU support list for a compatible BIOS first. The GPU or CPU decision is covered step by step in how to upgrade an old gaming PC.

Who should skip these CPUs?

Four chips are poor gaming buys at September 2026 prices:
