At a glance
The Google Fitbit Air is the best screenless fitness tracker for most UK buyers in September 2026. The Google Fitbit Air costs £84.99 on Amazon UK at the time of writing, tracks heart rate, heart rate variability, SpO2 and sleep stages around the clock, and works without a subscription. The WHOOP 5.0 is the better tool for athletes who train hard enough to value its 14-plus day battery and bicep wear, but the WHOOP One plan costs £169 every year. The Oura Ring 4 has the strongest published sleep validation, and the Polar Loop is the pick for buyers who never want to see a membership fee.
This is a head-to-head built around the Fitbit Air. For a ranked list across every tracker type, see Best fitness tracker UK 2026.
What is the Google Fitbit Air and who is it for?
The Google Fitbit Air is a screenless fitness band that records health data 24/7 and shows it only in the Google Health app on your phone. Google announced the Fitbit Air on 7 May 2026 and put it on sale in the UK on 26 May 2026 at £84.99. The Fitbit Air is a 5.2 g sensor pod that weighs 12 g with its band, and it has no display at all: feedback comes from a vibration motor and four status LEDs.
Google lists an optical heart rate monitor, a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, red and infrared sensors for SpO2, and a device temperature sensor that feeds skin temperature variation into the app. The Fitbit Air tracks resting heart rate, HRV, sleep stages and duration, and runs passive heart rhythm checks with AFib alerts. It detects workouts automatically, stores heart rate at 2-second intervals and connects over Bluetooth 5.0 to Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later.
The Google Fitbit Air suits buyers who want recovery and sleep data without a second screen on the wrist, people who found a smartwatch too bulky to sleep in, and anyone who looked at WHOOP and balked at the annual fee. It suits runners who want GPS maps without carrying a phone far less well, because the Fitbit Air has no GPS of its own.

Fitbit Air vs WHOOP: which is better?
The Google Fitbit Air is better for most buyers, and the WHOOP 5.0 is better for serious athletes. The two share the same idea, a screenless band that scores sleep, strain and recovery, but they are sold in very different ways. The Fitbit Air is a one-off £84.99 purchase. The WHOOP 5.0 is not sold as hardware at all: WHOOP bundles the sensor with a membership, and the WHOOP One plan costs £169 for 12 months on Amazon UK at the time of writing, WHOOP Peak £229 and WHOOP Life (with the WHOOP MG sensor) £349.
The WHOOP 5.0 wins on three things. WHOOP rates the 5.0 at 14-plus days per charge, twice the Fitbit Air's 7 days. WHOOP sells bicep, calf and apparel mounts, and bicep wear gives an optical sensor a steadier read during running and cycling. And in head-to-head workout tests by DC Rainmaker and the5krunner, WHOOP produced the cleaner heart rate traces (details in the accuracy section below).
The Google Fitbit Air wins on price, openness and water. The Fitbit Air keeps its core metrics free forever, while the WHOOP 5.0 needs an active membership to work. The Fitbit Air is water resistant to 50 metres against IP68 to 10 metres for the WHOOP 5.0. The WHOOP One tier also leaves out Healthspan and the Stress Monitor (both need Peak), and the ECG-based Heart Screener and blood pressure insights need WHOOP Life.

What about other screenless bands?
The Polar Loop is the other screenless band worth a look in the UK. Polar rates the Loop at 8 days of battery and WR30 water resistance, and Polar Flow unlocks every feature with no fee. The Polar Loop cost £154.98 on Amazon UK at the time of writing, £70 more than the Fitbit Air, and it weighs 29 g with its band against 12 g, with no SpO2 or temperature sensor listed by Polar. The Amazfit Helio Strap is a third option, but Compare Electronic could find only replacement straps, not the tracker itself, on Amazon UK in September 2026.

Fitbit Air vs Oura Ring: band or ring?
Choose the Google Fitbit Air for workouts and value, and the Oura Ring 4 for sleep and discretion. The Oura Ring 4 cost £244 on Amazon UK at the time of writing for the silver finish, weighs 3.3 to 5.2 g depending on size, and is water resistant to 100 metres. Oura rates the Ring 4 at 5 to 8 days of battery. A ring sits unnoticed under a duvet and does not catch on sleeves, which is why rings suit sleep-first buyers.
The trade-off is running cost and training data. The Oura Ring 4 needs a membership at £5.99 a month or £69.99 a year in the UK for its full insights, and a ring on a finger is a poor place for heart rate during weights or anything involving a grip. The Fitbit Air sits on the wrist, where workout detection and heart rate zones behave more like a conventional tracker. Oura has since launched the Oura Ring 5 from £399, which Oura says is 40% smaller than the Ring 4.

What about the Samsung Galaxy Ring?
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is the no-subscription ring, but it works only with Android phones. Samsung rates the Galaxy Ring at up to 7 days of battery with an IP68 and 10ATM rating, and it weighs 2.3 to 3.2 g. Galaxy Ring listings on Amazon UK ran from £214.89 to £399 across the sizes Compare Electronic checked in September 2026, and the Oura Ring 4 remains our ring pick for UK buyers.
Do you need a subscription?
You need a subscription for WHOOP, you want one for Oura, and you can skip one on the Google Fitbit Air and Polar Loop. The free Google Health app keeps steps, cardio load, Readiness, sleep score, sleep stages, heart rate, HRV and SpO2 for Fitbit Air owners. Google Health Premium, the renamed Fitbit Premium, costs £7.99 a month on the Google Store UK and adds Google Health Coach (built on Gemini), adaptive fitness plans, detailed sleep insights and a workout library. Every Fitbit Air includes a 3-month Premium trial, and Premium comes bundled with Google's top two Google One plans.
The practical read: Premium changes how the Fitbit Air explains your data, not what it measures. Buyers who want numbers can let the trial lapse. Buyers who want a coach telling them what to do with those numbers should budget for it, and the 3-year table below shows what that does to the real price.
What does each tracker really cost over 3 years?
The Google Fitbit Air is the cheapest tracker to own over 3 years, at £84.99 with no plan or £348.66 with Google Health Premium. Compare Electronic's 3-year true cost table adds each device's Amazon UK price (September 2026) to 36 months of any required or recommended subscription at UK list prices. Premium is costed at £7.99 for the 33 months after the free trial; Oura at the £69.99 annual rate; WHOOP at its annual plan price.
| Tracker and plan | Device | Subscription (36 months) | 3-year total | Per month |

| WHOOP 5.0, WHOOP One | Included | £507.00 | £507.00 | £14.08 |
| WHOOP 5.0, WHOOP Peak | Included | £687.00 | £687.00 | £19.08 |
Compare Electronic's read: three years of WHOOP One costs £422.01 more than a Fitbit Air on the free app, and £158.34 more than a Fitbit Air with Premium for all 36 months. The Oura Ring 4 with membership lands in between at £453.97. The Galaxy Ring row uses the £399 top listing. Subscription prices can rise; Google Health Premium already costs more than the Fitbit Premium it replaced.

Which is most accurate for sleep and heart rate?
The Oura Ring has the strongest published record for sleep and overnight heart data, WHOOP leads on workout heart rate, and the Google Fitbit Air has no peer-reviewed validation yet. Compare Electronic could find no independent study of the Fitbit Air itself as of September 2026, so the evidence below covers earlier models from each brand, plus two independent workout comparisons of the Fitbit Air.
Sleep
Robbins and colleagues (Sensors, 2024) tested an Oura Ring Gen3, a Fitbit Sense 2 and an Apple Watch Series 8 against polysomnography on 35 adults. All three detected sleep versus wake with at least 95% sensitivity. For four-stage sleep, Cohen's kappa was 0.65 for Oura, 0.60 for Apple and 0.55 for Fitbit. Miller and colleagues (Sensors, 2022) tested six devices on 53 adults: multi-stage agreement with polysomnography was 61% for an Oura Ring Gen2 and 60% for a WHOOP 3.0, and sleep-wake agreement was 89% and 86%.
Overnight heart rate and HRV
Dial and colleagues (Physiological Reports, 2025) compared five wearables against a Polar H10 chest strap over 536 nights from 13 adults. For resting heart rate, the Oura Ring 4 scored a concordance correlation of 0.98 and the WHOOP 4.0 scored 0.91. For HRV, the Oura Ring 4 scored 0.99 and the WHOOP 4.0 scored 0.94. No Fitbit was in that study.
Workout heart rate
In the5krunner's HYROX simulation against an ECG chest strap, the Google Fitbit Air got average heart rate within about 1 bpm but showed the widest error range of any device tested, up to 22 bpm, while a WHOOP MG worn on the bicep read about 1.2 bpm high. DC Rainmaker found the WHOOP ahead of the Fitbit Air wrist-to-wrist and blamed light leaking under the Fitbit Air's thin band. Google has pushed firmware updates since launch, so treat these as launch results.
Which lasts longest on a charge?
The WHOOP 5.0 lasts longest of the screenless trackers at 14-plus days, twice the Google Fitbit Air's 7 days. DC Rainmaker's Fitbit Air lasted from Thursday afternoon to the following Thursday morning with 2 to 4 hours of daily workouts, in line with Google's rating. The Fitbit Air recovers fast: Google quotes a full charge in 90 minutes and a day of use from 5 minutes on the charger. The WHOOP 5.0 can also charge on the wrist with the PowerPack, which comes with WHOOP Peak and sells separately for £44.
| Tracker | Rated battery | Charges per year |
|---|---|---|
| WHOOP 5.0 | 14+ days | 26 |
| Polar Loop | 8 days | 46 |
| Oura Ring 4 | 5 to 8 days | 46 to 73 |
| Google Fitbit Air | 7 days | 52 |
| Fitbit Charge 6 | 7 days | 52 |
| Samsung Galaxy Ring | Up to 7 days | 52 |
Charges per year is 365 divided by the manufacturer's rated days, rounded. The screened Xiaomi Smart Band 10 beats all of them with a rated 21 days, about 17 charges a year.
Should you go screenless or keep a screen?
Go screenless if sleep, recovery and comfort matter most; keep a screen if you want live stats, notifications or GPS on the wrist. Compare Electronic's screen or no screen decision matrix sets out what each form factor gives and takes away.

The Fitbit Charge 6 is the screened alternative to the Google Fitbit Air from the same app. The Fitbit Charge 6 cost £109 on Amazon UK at the time of writing, £24.01 more than the Fitbit Air, and adds a colour AMOLED touchscreen, built-in GPS, an ECG app and Google Wallet, with the same 7-day battery and 50-metre water rating. The Xiaomi Smart Band 10 is the budget screened option at £39.99.

What should UK buyers check before ordering?
- Price: the Google Fitbit Air is listed at £84.99 on Amazon UK at the time of writing, and Google sells it at the same price.
- Ring sizing: Oura sizes do not match UK jewellery sizes, so order the Oura sizing kit first.
- Phone compatibility: the Google Fitbit Air, WHOOP 5.0, Oura Ring 4 and Polar Loop work with iPhone and Android; the Samsung Galaxy Ring needs Android 11 or later.
- Returns: the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject faulty goods for a full refund, whichever of these you buy.
- Updates: Google promises security updates for the Fitbit Air for at least two years after it is last sold on the US Google Store.
Is the Fitbit Air worth it in the UK?
Yes. At £84.99, the Google Fitbit Air is worth it for anyone who wants 24/7 sleep, heart rate and recovery tracking without a screen or a compulsory fee. Three years with the Fitbit Air on the free app costs £84.99, against £453.97 for an Oura Ring 4 with membership and £507 for WHOOP One. The Fitbit Air suits casual exercisers, sleep trackers and anyone replacing a lapsed smartwatch habit.
Skip the Google Fitbit Air for the WHOOP 5.0 if you train hard and want bicep wear and the longest battery; for the Oura Ring 4 if sleep data is the main event; for the Polar Loop if you want a band with no subscription tier at all; and for a screened tracker if you need GPS on the wrist. Google put it on sale on 26 May 2026.
Is the Google Fitbit Air better than WHOOP?

No. The Google Fitbit Air works without a subscription, and the free Google Health app keeps steps, sleep stages, sleep score, Readiness, heart rate, HRV and SpO2. Google Health Premium costs £7.99 a month in the UK and adds Google Health Coach, adaptive fitness plans and deeper sleep insights. Every Fitbit Air includes a 3-month Premium trial.
How much does the Google Fitbit Air cost in the UK?

At £84.99 the Google Fitbit Air is the cheapest screenless tracker on this shortlist and costs £422.01 less than three years of WHOOP One.
