256GB is the right amount of phone storage for most UK buyers in 2026, and 128GB is enough only for a light user who streams and backs photos up to the cloud. Apple and Samsung now start their flagships at 256GB: the Apple iPhone 17, Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra all begin there.

The step up is cheap on Android: on Amazon UK at the time of writing (October 2026), 256GB costs £31.58 more than 128GB on the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G and £50 more on the Google Pixel 10a. The phones match Best phone UK autumn 2026. The table sets the storage for each type of user.

How much more does 256GB cost than 128GB?

Doubling the storage on the same phone costs £31.58 to £200 in matched Amazon UK listings at the time of writing (October 2026), and the cheapest step is on mid-range Android. Each pair below is the same model in the same colour, so storage is the only difference.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro (Black)256GB, £1,199.00512GB, £1,399.00£200.00£0.78

The Galaxy A57 charges 25p per extra gigabyte, a quarter of the Pixel 10's £1.02. Colour moves the maths too: the Apple iPhone 17 256GB in Black costs £799 against £899 in White, while the 512GB costs £1,099 in both, so the Black step is £300. The labelled capacity is not all usable: Samsung lists 218.6GB of the Galaxy S26 Ultra's 256GB as available, so the system takes 37.4GB. Storage is separate from memory, which is covered in Is 8GB RAM enough in 2026?

How much storage does 4K video use on a phone?

4K video at 30 fps uses more than 10.5GB per hour in the standard HEVC format, and more than 396GB per hour in ProRes 422 HQ, according to the per-minute figures in Apple's Final Cut Camera guide: more than 175MB and 6.6GB a minute. Compare Electronic's table converts them into recording time for each capacity.

Compare Electronic's 4K recording time by capacity (Apple per-minute figures, full capacity free)

4K 30 fps, HEVC (more than 175MB a minute)More than 10.5GBUp to 12 hoursUp to 24 hoursUp to 48 hours

4K 30 fps, ProRes 422 HQ (more than 6.6GB a minute)More than 396GBUp to 19 minutesUp to 38 minutesUp to 77 minutes

The times assume the whole capacity is free, so real totals are lower once the system and apps take their share. HEVC is the default on iPhone and suits most buyers, and even ProRes LT fills a 256GB phone in under an hour and a half. ProRes is for editing, and Apple lists ProRes recording on its Pro models only, such as the iPhone 17 Pro; Apple adds that 4K 60 fps ProRes must record to an external drive.

Is cloud storage cheaper than a bigger phone?

On Android, usually not: the 128GB step on the Galaxy A57 and Pixel 10a costs less than three years of Google One. On iPhone, three years of 200GB iCloud+ costs less than Apple's 512GB step, but it adds no room for apps or offline downloads.

Apple lists iCloud+ in the UK at £0.99 a month for 50GB, £2.99 for 200GB and £8.99 for 2TB, with 5GB free. Google One lists 100GB at £1.59 a month or £15.99 a year and 2TB at £7.99 a month, with up to 15GB free on every Google Account. The table sets three years of the nearest plan against each one-off storage step.

Two caveats change the close calls. Paid annually, Google One 100GB costs £47.97 over three years, £2.03 less than the Pixel 10a step, so that one is a toss-up. And a cloud bill keeps running after three years while storage is paid once. Cloud backup is worth having either way; it protects photos if the phone is lost, which extra storage does not.

Which phone has the right storage for the money?

Frequently asked questions

Is 128GB enough for a phone in 2026?

128GB is enough for a light user who streams music and video and backs photos up to the cloud, but tight for anyone who records 4K video or keeps photos on the phone. Apple's figures put 4K video at more than 10.5GB per hour. The 256GB Samsung Galaxy A57 5G costs £31.58 more than the 128GB model on Amazon UK at the time of writing (October 2026).

Is 256GB enough for a phone?

Yes. 256GB is enough for most buyers in 2026 and is the starting capacity of the Apple iPhone 17, Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung lists 218.6GB of the Galaxy S26 Ultra's 256GB as available to the owner. At Apple's figure of more than 10.5GB per hour of 4K video, that space holds up to about 20 hours of footage.

Do I need 512GB on a phone?

Only for heavy video work or a large offline library. Apple's Final Cut Camera guide puts one minute of 4K ProRes 422 HQ at more than 6.6GB, so 256GB holds under 40 minutes. On Amazon UK in October 2026, 512GB costs £149.90 more on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and £200 more on the Apple iPhone 17 and Apple iPhone 18 Pro.

How much storage does 4K video take on a phone?

One minute of 4K video at 30 fps in HEVC uses more than 175MB, according to Apple's Final Cut Camera guide, which is more than 10.5GB per hour. ProRes 422 HQ at the same setting uses more than 6.6GB a minute, or 396GB an hour. HEVC suits most buyers; Apple lists ProRes recording on its Pro iPhones only.

Is iCloud or Google One cheaper than buying more storage?

On Android, usually not: the extra 128GB costs £31.58 on the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G and £50 on the Google Pixel 10a, against £57.24 for three years of Google One's £1.59 a month 100GB plan. On iPhone, three years of 200GB iCloud+ at £2.99 a month costs £107.64, less than Apple's £200 step from 256GB to 512GB.

Can I add a memory card to my phone?

Not on current flagships. No current iPhone, Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy S phone has a memory card slot, so the storage bought on day one is the storage kept. Buyers who might run short should choose 256GB at purchase, or plan on iCloud+ from £0.99 a month or Google One from £1.59 a month, at UK prices in October 2026.
