A Kindle is worth it for anyone who reads 11 or more books a year, because Kindle editions cost less than paperbacks: across five Amazon UK bestsellers, the ebook averaged £2.70 less. The £84.99 Kindle (2024) pays for itself after 32 books, while UK library borrowers should buy a Kobo instead, because Kindle cannot take UK library loans.

Prices are Amazon UK at the time of writing (October 2026). The full e-reader shortlist is in Best e-reader UK 2026.

Is a Kindle cheaper than paperbacks over three years?

Yes, for a reader of one book a month or more. Compare Electronic took five bestsellers from Amazon UK's charts on 11 October 2026 and priced both formats: the Kindle edition averaged £5.09 and the paperback £7.79.

The break-even is 32 books for the Kindle (2024), 69 for the Kindle Paperwhite and 89 for the Kindle Colorsoft. At 6 books a year the Kindle never quite catches up within three years, at 12 it is £12.21 ahead, and at 24 it is £109.41 ahead. Kindle Unlimited costs £9.49 a month, or £341.64 over three years, and overtakes buying Kindle editions at two books a month; at 24 books a year it is the cheapest Amazon route, £24.84 below buying each ebook.

Two caveats apply. Kindle prices swing with daily deals, as The Teacher at £0.99 shows, and the library route only works when the library holds the title. Prime members also get one Amazon First Reads title a month at no cost, as covered in Is Amazon Prime worth it?

How long does a Kindle battery last?

Amazon rates the Kindle (2024) at up to 6 weeks on a charge, the Kindle Colorsoft at up to 8 weeks and the Kindle Paperwhite at up to 12 weeks. Amazon's newer 2026 Kindle, at £149.99 without ads, keeps the same 6-week rating.

Kobo Libra ColourUp to 40 days (about 5.7 weeks)Kobo

The figures depend on reading time and light level; Kobo's Libra Colour rating assumes 30 minutes a day with the front light at 30%. An E Ink screen holds a page without power, so a Kindle charged on the first of the month lasts a holiday where a tablet lasts an evening.

That is the main case for a Kindle over reading on a phone or tablet, which share their battery with every other app and have backlit screens. An E Ink page reflects room light like paper, and the Kindle (2024) weighs 158 g. Buyers who also want video, web and drawing should compare an iPad in Which iPad should I buy?, but for books alone the £84.99 Kindle costs a fraction of any tablet.

Can a Kindle borrow UK library books, or is Kobo better?

No: Libby's help pages state that reading Libby books on a Kindle e-reader is available in the U.S. only. Kobo says the Kobo Libra Colour borrows ebooks directly from a local library with OverDrive and Libby integration, and lists the Kobo Clara BW as able to borrow from a local library too.

For a regular library user, the £50 gap between the Kindle (2024) and the Kobo Clara BW closes quickly: each loan saves the full price of a book, so at the £5.09 Kindle average the gap is repaid after 10 borrowed titles. Kobo notes that OverDrive is available only in select countries.

File formats are the second split. A Kindle reads books from Amazon's store and DRM-free files sent through Amazon's Send to Kindle service, but cannot open an ePub copied over USB. Kobo lists 15 formats supported natively on the Kobo Libra Colour, including EPUB, PDF and the CBZ and CBR comic formats. A reader with an existing ePub library, or one who buys from several stores, gets more from a Kobo; a reader who buys only from Amazon gets the cheaper device and Kindle Unlimited with a Kindle.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Kindle cheaper than buying paperbacks?

Yes, after about 32 books. Across five Amazon UK bestsellers in October 2026, the Kindle edition averaged £5.09 and the paperback £7.79, a £2.70 saving per book. Kindle Unlimited costs £9.49 a month after any free period, according to Amazon UK, or £341.64 over three years. It beats buying Kindle editions at two books a month or more, at the £5.09 average Kindle price of five current bestsellers. Four of those five were in Kindle Unlimited in October 2026; The Correspondent, the 2026 Women's Prize winner, was not.

Can you get library books on a Kindle in the UK?

No. Libby's help pages state that reading Libby books on a Kindle e-reader is available in the U.S. only, so UK library ebooks cannot be sent to an Amazon Kindle.
