An Echo Dot is worth it at £29.99 for anyone who wants voice timers, radio, weather and smart home control, because all of that works with no subscription. Alexa+ is free during Early Access and will be included with Prime afterwards, according to Amazon UK, so the only real running cost is £19.99 a month for non-Prime members who want it.
Prices are Amazon UK at the time of writing (October 2026). Whether Prime itself pays is covered in Is Amazon Prime worth it?

What does an Echo Dot do without a subscription?
Almost everything on the box. Amazon lists weather, timers and answers to questions, voice control of compatible smart home devices over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy Mesh and Matter, routines triggered by its temperature sensor, and music, audiobooks and podcasts from Amazon Music, Audible, Apple Music and Spotify. With no subscription at all, Amazon Music offers an ad-supported selection of top playlists and stations on Alexa devices.
The Echo Dot also works as a plain Bluetooth speaker for a phone, syncs with other Echo speakers for multi-room audio and extends Wi-Fi with compatible eero devices. Privacy controls are free too: Amazon lists a Microphone Off button, a light that shows when Alexa is streaming, and the option to view and delete voice recordings. For a household that only wants timers, a kitchen radio and voice control of a few Matter plugs, the £29.99 outlay is the whole cost, or £10.00 a year over three years.
| Set-up | What it adds | 3-year cost | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Dot, free features only | Timers, weather, smart home, free music stations | £29.99 | £10.00 |
| Echo Dot plus Prime | Alexa+ after Early Access, Amazon Music Prime, delivery | £314.99 | £105.00 |
| Echo Dot plus Prime plus Music Unlimited (annual) | Full on-demand music catalogue | £671.99 | £224.00 |
| Echo Dot plus Alexa+ standalone, no Prime | Alexa+ only | £749.63 | £249.88 |
| Echo Dot Max, free features only | Better music, smart home hub | £59.99 | £20.00 |
| Echo Studio (2025), free features only | Dolby Atmos, smart home hub | £174.99 | £58.33 |
The speaker is the cheap part. Over three years, Prime adds £285 and Amazon Music Unlimited at the £119 Prime annual price adds £357, so a fully subscribed Echo Dot costs 22 times its sticker price. Spotify and Apple Music work with the buyer's own account, and Amazon notes that certain skills and services may require subscription or other fees. The music trade-offs are in Amazon Music Unlimited vs Spotify.
Do you have to pay for Alexa+ in the UK?
Not with Prime. Amazon UK's Echo listings state that a buyer of a new Echo can upgrade to Alexa+ Early Access for free, and that after Early Access ends, with at least 30 days' notice, Alexa+ will be included with Prime. For non-Prime members, Alexa+ will be a standalone subscription at £19.99 a month that does not auto-renew.
Amazon states two UK conditions: Alexa+ is currently only available in English in the UK, and Early Access needs a personal, UK-based Amazon account with English set on all compatible Alexa+ devices. At £19.99 a month, Alexa+ alone costs £239.88 a year, more than twice the £95 annual Prime fee that includes it, so a non-Prime buyer who wants Alexa+ should take Prime instead. Buyers who skip both keep the free features listed above.
Echo Dot vs Echo Dot Max vs Echo Studio: how much better is the sound?
Each step up doubles the driver count. The Echo Dot has one 1.73-inch speaker, the Echo Dot Max a 2.5-inch woofer and 0.8-inch tweeter with 3x more bass than the Echo Dot (2022 release) by Amazon's figure, and the Echo Studio (2025) a 3.75-inch woofer and three full-range drivers with Dolby Atmos.
| Speaker | Drivers | Bandwidth | Audio features | Weight | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Dot (5th gen) | 1.73-inch front-firing speaker | Not stated | None listed | 340 g | £29.99 |
| Echo Dot Max | 2.5-inch woofer, 0.8-inch tweeter | 53 Hz to 16 kHz | Room adaptation, lossless HD | 505 g | £59.99 |
| Echo Studio (2025) | 3.75-inch woofer, 3 x 2.25-inch full-range | 30 Hz to 18 kHz | Dolby Atmos, spatial audio, 3.1.1 | 1.63 kg | £174.99 |
| Sonos Era 100 | 2 angled tweeters, 1 mid-woofer | Not stated | Stereo, Trueplay tuning | 2.02 kg | £179.00 |
The Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio also carry a Zigbee, Matter and Thread smart home hub, which the Echo Dot lacks, so Zigbee bulbs and sensors pair without a separate bridge. The Sonos Era 100 plays in stereo from one box and works with Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control, but Sonos lists no smart home hub. For TV sound, an Echo pairs with a Fire TV device, compared in Best streaming stick UK 2026; a soundbar is the stronger fix, as set out in Do I need a soundbar?
