Buying renewed saves real money on phones and consoles that are a year or more old, and almost nothing on current models. Compare Electronic priced six identical models, new and Amazon Renewed, on Amazon UK on 23 September 2026. The renewed iPhone 16 128GB cost £479.99 against £719.10 new, a £239.11 (33.3%) saving, and the renewed Nintendo Switch cost £155 against £248 new, 37.5% off. The renewed Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB is the best flagship value at £562.33, 17.2% under new. At the other end, the renewed iPad (A16) saved £1.01 and one renewed iPhone 17 Pro listing cost more than the new phone.

Every Amazon Renewed product carries a one-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee and a battery tested to at least 80% of original capacity. Compare Electronic has not tested renewed units hands-on, so everything below rests on Amazon UK's published standards, UK consumer law and the listing prices.

Buying a refurbished iPhone? Amazon Renewed is only one route. Our guide to the best place to buy a refurbished iPhone in the UK compares the main UK sellers on price, battery standards and warranty length.

What is the difference between new, renewed, refurbished, pre-owned and used?

The difference is who checked the device and what they promise about it. "New" is sealed stock with a full manufacturer warranty. The other four labels overlap, so the grade and the warranty matter more than the word on the listing.

  • New: unopened, 100% battery, manufacturer warranty (1 year from Apple and Nintendo, 2 years on Samsung UK phones).
  • Renewed:Amazon's own label for refurbished, pre-owned and open-box stock. Amazon states that a qualified supplier inspects and tests each item, replaces defective parts and cleans it, and backs it with a one-year guarantee.
  • Refurbished: the generic term. A refurbisher has tested and repaired the device, but standards and warranties are set by each seller, from 12 months to 5 years in the UK.
  • Pre-owned: previously owned and resold by a business, sometimes with no repair work. The seller is still a trader under UK law.
  • Used: usually a private sale on a marketplace, with no testing, no warranty and far fewer legal rights.

Is Amazon Renewed worth it?

Amazon Renewed is worth it when the saving clears 15% and the device still has years of software support left. Across the six pairs Compare Electronic priced, the new devices totalled £3,224.11 and the renewed versions £2,683.31, a combined saving of £540.80 (16.8%). That average hides a wide spread: three pairs saved more than 17%, and three saved 10.5% or less.

The pattern is age. Renewed prices fall fastest on models a generation or two old, because that is when trade-ins flood the refurbishment supply. The iPhone 16 launched in September 2024 and its renewed price sits a third below new. The iPhone 17 Pro launched in September 2025, and the cheapest renewed listing is only 7.2% under the new iPhone 17 Pro at £979.02. The renewed Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro listing costs £979.99, 97p more than the new Deep Blue phone.

Renewed pricing can also be plainly wrong. On the same day a renewed Galaxy S25 256GB was listed at £549.99, while the new Galaxy S25 256GB cost £529. A renewed MacBook Air M4 with 16 GB of memory was listed at £1,499, above the new MacBook Air 13-inch M5 at £1,187.97, and a renewed iPad Air (M3) cost £614.99 against £669 for the newer iPad Air 11-inch (M4). The first rule of buying renewed is to open the new listing in the next tab.

What does Renewed Premium add?

Renewed Premium adds a higher battery floor, a cleaner cosmetic standard and premium packaging, but not a longer warranty. Amazon UK's Renewed help page sets out four conditions, and Premium is the top one:

ConditionScreenBody at 30 cmBatteryPackaging
PremiumNo scratchesNo visible damageOver 90%Premium packaging
ExcellentNo scratchesNo visible damageOver 80%Standard or generic box
GoodNo scratchesLight scratches, barely visibleOver 80%Standard or generic box
AcceptableA few shallow scratches, invisible with screen onLight scratches, clearly visibleOver 80%Standard or generic box

The battery gap is the part worth paying for. A phone at 80% holds four-fifths of its original charge, so a handset rated for 22 hours of video when new, like the iPhone 16, could fall to around 17.6 hours at the Renewed floor, against 19.8 hours at the Premium floor. Amazon applies the same one-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee to every condition, Premium included. Accessories on all four grades may be generic rather than original.

How much do you actually save?

The saving ranges from £1.01 to £239.11 on Amazon UK today, and the table below shows exactly where. Compare Electronic's real-saving table pairs the cheapest new listing with the cheapest renewed listing for the same model and storage, colour ignored, priced on 23 September 2026.

The saving-per-year column divides the £ saving by the years of software support left from September 2026, because a phone or tablet without security updates is a phone to replace. Apple commits to a minimum of 5 years of security updates from first supply in its UK product security statements, so the iPhone 16 (September 2024) runs to at least September 2029, the iPad (A16) (March 2025) to March 2030 and the iPhone 17 Pro (September 2025) to September 2030. Apple usually supports iPhones for longer, so these figures are conservative. Samsung promises 7 years of OS and security updates for the Galaxy S25 series from its February 2025 launch, which leaves about 5.4 years. Consoles and earbuds have no comparable published policy, so they read n/a.

On that measure the renewed iPhone 16 is the standout at £79.70 saved per year of support. The Galaxy S25 Ultra saves less per year (£21.60) but has the longest runway: 5.4 years of updates is more than the 4 years left on a new iPhone 17 Pro.

  • Memory and storage: 12 GB / 256 GB
  • Main camera: 200 MP
  • Battery: 5000 mAh
  • Weight: 218 g
  • Update policy: 7 years from launch

The renewed Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB costs £562.33 on Amazon UK at the time of writing (September 2026), £116.66 under the cheapest new Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GBat £678.99. Samsung rates the S25 Ultra with a 6.9-inch 120 Hz display, a 200 MP main camera, a 5,000 mAh battery and a built-in S Pen, and Samsung's 7-year update promise leaves about 5.4 years of support. That long runway is why a renewed Samsung flagship ages better than a renewed phone with a shorter policy.

One detail matters: this listing describes an EU-market unit (model SM-S938B, dual SIM). SM-S938B is the same model code Samsung sells in the UK, but buyers should confirm the grade shown on the listing and check that the IMEI is clean on arrival. That is the largest cash saving in Compare Electronic's sample. Apple rates the iPhone 16 at 22 hours of video playback with the A18 chip, Camera Control and a 48 MP main camera, and the phone supports Apple Intelligence. At the Renewed battery floor of 80%, the 22-hour rating falls to roughly 17.6 hours, which is still a full day for most owners.

Consoles suit renewed buying because the value sits in the hardware, not in a software clock, and Joy-Con can be replaced separately if they wear.

The renewed iPhone 17 Pro 256GB in Cosmic Orange costs £909 on Amazon UK at the time of writing (September 2026), £70.02 under the new iPhone 17 Pro 256GB at £979.02. The listing is a "SIM Global" import, and the Deep Blue renewed listing costs £979.99, more than the new phone. A 7.2% saving buys a used battery and a one-year guarantee in place of a sealed box, which is a poor trade on a phone this recent.

The same logic applies to the renewed AirPods Pro 3 at £179 against £200 for new AirPods Pro 3, and to the renewed iPad (A16) at £397.99 against £399 for the new iPad (A16). For tablet picks, see Best tablet UK 2026.

Is a renewed device the same quality as new?

A renewed device performs like new when it passes testing, but it is not identical to new in three ways: battery, cosmetics and parts. Amazon states that every Renewed product is fully functional, inspected and tested by a qualified supplier, with defective parts replaced.

  • Battery health: Amazon UK guarantees at least 80% of original capacity at the time of sale, or at least 90% on Renewed Premium. A new battery starts at 100%. The chip, screen and cameras perform the same; the battery is where a renewed phone is measurably behind.
  • Cosmetic grade: Premium and Excellent show no screen scratches and no damage visible at 30 cm. Good allows light body scratches, and Acceptable allows shallow screen scratches that are invisible when the screen is on.
  • Non-original parts: Amazon allows defective parts to be replaced and accessories to be generic, and it does not require manufacturer parts. On an iPhone, Settings, General, About shows a Parts and Service History entry that flags non-genuine screens, batteries and cameras.
  • Water resistance: Amazon states that refurbished phones are not guaranteed to keep their waterproof seal. An IP68 rating on the spec sheet should be treated as unconfirmed on a renewed phone.

Headphones are not included with Renewed wireless devices, and packaging may be a generic box. None of that affects how the Galaxy S25 Ultra or iPhone 16 performs, but it affects resale value later.

What are your rights when buying refurbished in the UK?

UK buyers have the same core Consumer Rights Act 2015 protection on refurbished goods as on new ones, provided the seller is a trader. Goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.

  • 30-day right to reject: a faulty item returned within 30 days of delivery qualifies for a full refund.
  • After 30 days: the trader gets one attempt at a repair or replacement. If that fails, the buyer can claim a refund, reduced for use after the first 6 months.
  • The 6-month rule: a fault appearing within 6 months is presumed to have been there at delivery unless the trader proves otherwise. After 6 months the buyer has to show it.
  • 14-day cancellation: the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 let online buyers cancel within 14 days of delivery for any reason when the seller is a trader.
  • What counts as a fault: satisfactory quality takes the price and description into account, so scratches described in a Good or Acceptable grade are not a fault. A battery below the promised floor is.

The trader versus private seller split is the big one. A private seller on a classified site only has to describe the item accurately and have the right to sell it; the Consumer Rights Act 2015 quality rules and the 30-day right to reject do not apply. Amazon Renewed sellers are traders, and third-party sales add the one-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee on top of the legal rights.

Which devices are safest to buy renewed, and which should you buy new?

Phones, laptops, tablets and consoles are the safest renewed buys; earbuds, power banks and anything worn on the body are better bought new.

Buy renewed

  • Phones one or two generations old: the biggest savings (33.3% on the iPhone 16 128GB) and batteries that can be replaced for a fixed fee.
  • Laptops: high prices mean large £ savings when a fair listing appears, and a laptop battery reports its cycle count. Check listings against the new prices in Best laptop UK 2026 and Best student laptop UK 2026 first, because renewed MacBook pricing on Amazon UK is erratic.
  • Consoles: 37.5% off the Nintendo Switch, and no update clock to run down.

Buy new

  • Earbuds: ear tips touch the inside of the ear, the batteries are small and sealed, and renewed AirPods Pro 3 save only £21 (10.5%).
  • Power banks and battery-first gadgets: the battery is the product, so an 80% floor removes a fifth of what is being bought.
  • Current-generation models: the iPhone 17 Pro and iPad (A16) pairs saved 7.2% and 0.3%, too little to justify a used battery.

Compare Electronic's renewed buying checklist

Eight checks cover almost every renewed-phone problem. The first four happen before paying; the last four happen on the day the parcel arrives.

  1. Battery health: Standard Renewed guarantees over 80%, Renewed Premium over 90%. On an iPhone, check Settings, Battery, Battery Health on day one and return the phone inside the window if the figure is below the promised floor.
  2. Condition grade: Read the grade on the listing (Premium, Excellent, Good or Acceptable). Acceptable allows shallow screen scratches and body scratches clearly visible at 30 cm.
  3. Warranty length: Amazon Renewed gives one year. Samsung Certified Re-Newed gives two, CeX five. Weigh the warranty gap against the price gap.
  4. Seller: Check whether Amazon or a third-party seller is the seller of record. Third-party Renewed sales carry the Amazon Renewed Guarantee on top of the seller's legal duties.
  5. Return window: Test everything in the first 30 days: cameras, speakers, microphones, charging, Face ID or fingerprint, Wi-Fi and mobile data. The 30-day right to reject gives a full refund for faults.
  6. Carrier lock and region: Confirm the phone is unlocked and note whether it is UK or imported stock ("SIM Global", EU model). Imports can differ in SIM tray, band support and charger.
  7. Activation Lock and accounts: An iPhone must arrive signed out of iCloud with Find My off, and an Android phone free of the previous owner's Google account. A locked device is unusable and should go straight back.
  8. IMEI check: Dial *#06# to show the IMEI, match it to the box, and run it through a lost-or-stolen blacklist check before relying on the phone.

Where else can you buy refurbished tech in the UK?

Six other UK sources sell refurbished electronics, and their warranties range from 12 months to 5 years.

  • Apple Certified Refurbished: a 1-year Apple warranty, and refurbished iPhones get a new battery and outer shell.
  • Samsung Certified Re-Newed: a 2-year warranty, the same as new Samsung phones, with genuine Samsung parts and a Samsung-certified battery.
  • Back Market: a marketplace of independent refurbishers with a minimum 1-year warranty and a 30-day return window.
  • CeX: grades phones and tablets A, B or C and offers a 5-year warranty on most second-hand products.
  • giffgaff refurbished:a 12, 18 or 24-month warranty depending on the phone's condition grade.
  • Music Magpie: a free 12-month warranty on refurbished tech.

The manufacturer programmes cost more than Amazon Renewed but close the two gaps that matter most: battery and parts. Samsung Certified Re-Newed listed a Galaxy S25 Ultra 512GB at £979 on Samsung UK at the time of writing.

Verdict

Renewed is the right call on a phone or console that is at least a year old, and the wrong call on anything current or anything you put in your ears. The renewed iPhone 16 128GB saves £239.11 (33.3%) and the renewed Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB saves £116.66 (17.2%) with about 5.4 years of updates left, which makes it the best-value renewed flagship on Amazon UK in September 2026. The renewed iPhone 17 Pro saves 7.2%, the iPad (A16) 0.3%, and neither is worth a used battery. Pay for Renewed Premium when battery life matters, run the eight-point checklist on arrival, and use the 30-day right to reject if anything falls short of the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amazon Renewed worth it in the UK?

Amazon Renewed is worth it on phones and consoles that are a year or more old, and rarely worth it on current models. On 23 September 2026 a renewed iPhone 16 128GB cost £479.99 against £719.10 new on Amazon UK, a 33.3% saving, while a renewed iPad (A16) cost £397.99 against £399 new. Every Renewed item carries a one-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee.

What is the difference between renewed and refurbished?

Renewed is Amazon's name for refurbished, pre-owned and open-box products sold through its Amazon Renewed store. Amazon states that Renewed items are inspected and tested to be fully functional by a qualified supplier, with defective parts replaced and the device cleaned. Refurbished is the general term other retailers use, and the standards vary by seller, so the grade definitions matter more than the label.

What battery health does Amazon Renewed guarantee?

Amazon UK states that Renewed devices have batteries tested to at least 80% of original capacity at the time of sale, and Renewed Premium devices at least 90%. A new battery is 100% by definition. Amazon does not promise a replacement battery, so a renewed phone at 81% battery health meets the standard even though it will run out sooner than a new one.

What does Amazon Renewed Premium mean?

Amazon Renewed Premium is the top Renewed condition. Amazon UK defines Premium as no scratches on the screen, no cosmetic damage visible from 30 centimetres, a battery above 90% of original capacity, and premium packaging. The warranty is the same one-year Amazon Renewed Guarantee that covers every other Renewed grade; Amazon's UK help pages do not promise a longer one for Premium.

Do I have the same rights buying refurbished as new in the UK?

Yes, when the seller is a trader. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires refurbished goods to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, with a 30-day right to reject faulty goods for a full refund. Satisfactory quality takes the description and price into account, so wear stated on a graded listing is not a fault. Private sellers only have to describe goods accurately.

Is a refurbished iPhone as good as a new one?

A refurbished iPhone performs the same as a new one when it passes testing, but the battery and parts can differ. Amazon Renewed only requires 80% battery capacity, and replacement parts may not be Apple originals; iOS lists non-genuine parts under Settings, General, About. Apple Certified Refurbished iPhones get a new battery and outer shell, which Amazon Renewed does not require.

Which devices should you never buy refurbished?

Earbuds, power banks and anything worn in or on the body are the weakest renewed buys. The battery in AirPods Pro 3 cannot be replaced cheaply, ear tips are a hygiene item, and the saving is small: renewed AirPods Pro 3 cost £179 against £200 new on Amazon UK on 23 September 2026. Phones, laptops, tablets and consoles are the strongest renewed buys.

How much do you save buying renewed instead of new?

Compare Electronic priced six new and renewed pairs on Amazon UK on 23 September 2026 and found savings from £1.01 to £239.11. The Nintendo Switch saved 37.5% (£155 against £248), the iPhone 16 128GB 33.3%, the Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB 17.2%, the iPhone 17 Pro 256GB 7.2%, AirPods Pro 3 10.5% and the iPad (A16) 0.3%.
