Snapdragon X2 Elite vs Panther Lake comes down to one trade: Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Elite gives Windows laptops the longest battery ratings and the lightest bodies, while Intel's Panther Lake gives them the strongest integrated graphics and full x86 app compatibility. Apple's M5 sits beside both as the pick for anyone happy on macOS. Our pick for most Windows buyers who browse, write and stream is the Snapdragon X2 Elite, shown here in the ASUS Zenbook A14 OLED. Buyers who game should pick Panther Lake in the Dell XPS 14 2026, and Mac buyers should pick the MacBook Air 13-inch M5.

This is a follow-on to our laptop processors explained guide, which covers all four chip families. Here the focus is the three chips that define premium thin laptops in late 2026.

What's the difference between Arm and x86 laptops?

Arm and x86 are two instruction sets, and the instruction set decides which software runs natively. The Snapdragon X2 Elite and the Apple M5 are Arm chips. Intel Panther Lake is an x86 chip, the same family Windows software has targeted for 40 years.

  • Snapdragon X2 Elite (Arm, Windows):the X2E-88-100 in the ASUS Zenbook A14 OLED has 18 CPU cores and an NPU rated at 80 TOPS by ASUS. Qualcomm builds it on TSMC's 3 nm process.
  • Intel Panther Lake (x86, Windows): the Core Ultra X7 358H in the Dell XPS 14 2026 has 16 CPU cores in a 4+8+4 layout and Arc B390 integrated graphics. Intel builds the compute tile on its own 18A process.
  • Apple M5 (Arm, macOS): the M5 in the MacBook Air 13-inch has a 10-core CPU, an 8-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, all sharing 16 GB of unified memory.

In practice, Arm chips have led on performance per watt, which is why the Snapdragon and Apple laptops run cooler and lighter. x86 chips have led on compatibility. Panther Lake narrows the efficiency gap, and Microsoft's Prism emulator narrows the compatibility gap, so the 2026 difference is smaller than it was in 2024.

Which chip is fastest in real-world tasks?

The Snapdragon X2 Elite leads on multi-core CPU work, Panther Lake leads on graphics, and the Apple M5 leads on sustained efficiency in a fanless body. The headline claims need context, because the most quoted numbers come from vendor-commissioned tests.

  • Multi-core CPU:Signal65, in a report commissioned by Qualcomm, measured the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme up to 87% ahead of Intel's flagship Panther Lake chip in Cinebench 2026 multi-threaded. Windows Central noted the Snapdragon machine ran on battery in Balanced mode against a plugged-in Intel machine, so treat 87% as a best case. The Zenbook A14's X2 Elite is a step below the Extreme tier.
  • Against Apple: PCWorld reported the Snapdragon X2 Elite ahead of the Apple M5 in a Qualcomm test video, which is a vendor demo rather than an independent review. The MacBook Air M5 also has no fan, so long exports throttle sooner than on the actively cooled Dell XPS 14.
  • Graphics:Intel's Arc B390 is the strongest integrated GPU of the three, and Notebookcheck described it as far ahead of other integrated options while still well short of a discrete laptop GPU.

For browsing, Office, Teams and photo edits, all three chips are faster than any buyer will notice. The differences only show in video exports, code compiles and games.

Which gives the best battery life?

The Snapdragon X2 Elite carries the longest manufacturer rating, but independent tests put Panther Lake close behind or ahead, depending on battery size and workload.

  • ASUS rates the Zenbook A14 OLED (70 Wh) at up to 33 hours.
  • Apple rates the MacBook Air 13-inch M5 at 18 hours of video playback and 15 hours of web browsing.
  • Notebookcheck measured the Dell XPS 14 2026 (70 Wh) at 16 hours 45 minutes of Wi-Fi browsing at 150 nits.
  • PCWorld's Netflix streaming test recorded 13 hours 4 minutes on an ASUS Zenbook A16 with the X2 Elite Extreme, against about 16.5 hours on an Intel Panther Lake reference laptop with a 99 Wh battery.

The honest reading: Panther Lake closed most of the gap to Arm in 2026. Snapdragon still wins on the lightest designs, and the Zenbook A14 weighs 0.99 kg against 1.36 kg for the Dell XPS 14 2026.

Do all Windows apps run on Snapdragon?

Most Windows apps run on the Snapdragon X2 Elite, but not all of them. Chrome, Edge, Microsoft 365, Zoom, Spotify, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom have native Arm versions. Apps without an Arm build run through Microsoft's Prism emulator, which added AVX2 support for the X2 generation.

The remaining gaps are specific:

  • Kernel-level anti-cheat in some online games.
  • Older printer, scanner and VPN drivers, which must be written for Arm.
  • Specialist engineering, audio and finance plug-ins.

Intel Panther Lake has none of these gaps because it is x86. That is the main reason business buyers still default to Intel. Our Copilot+ PC vs standard Windows laptop guide covers the on-device AI features all three Windows options now share.

Which chip should you choose for gaming?

Intel Panther Lake is the gaming pick of the three. The Arc B390 runs games natively on Windows, and Notebookcheck recorded around 46 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p without XeSS on an Acer Swift 16 AI with the same Core Ultra X7 358H.

The Snapdragon X2 Elite is improving. Qualcomm says 90% of the top Windows games run on Snapdragon X2 laptops, and Epic brought Fortnite and Easy Anti-Cheat to Windows on Snapdragon in November 2025. Other anti-cheat titles still need developer updates. The Apple M5 runs a growing list of native Mac games, but the library is a fraction of Windows. Anyone serious about gaming should skip all three and look at our best laptop UK 2026 picks with a discrete GPU.

UK buyer notes: check the listing for whether a charger is in the box, because Apple has started shipping some MacBooks in the UK without one. The Consumer Rights Act gives 30 days to reject a faulty laptop for a full refund on top of the manufacturer warranty. Memory is soldered on all three, so the 16 GB or 32 GB you buy on day one is permanent. With memory prices rising through 2026, buying enough up front costs less than replacing the laptop later.
