The rule

Buy refurbished when both are met and the seller gives 12 months of cover.
Two years of support, 80% battery

A refurbished iPhone is worth it for most UK buyers: it saves 36% to 38% on a model one or two years old, works like new, and comes with at least 12 months of cover from every major seller. The renewed iPhone 16 128GB costs £500.00 on Amazon UK at the time of writing (October 2026), £289.31 less than a new iPhone 16 128GBat £789.31. The two conditions are a battery at 80% or more of its original capacity and at least two years of Apple's guaranteed security support left.

It is not worth it on the newest model, where the discount is small, or for buyers who keep a phone five years. This explainer covers what refurbished means, what to check on arrival and how long each model stays supported; where to buy is ranked in Best place to buy refurbished iPhone UK.

Is a refurbished iPhone worth it?

Yes, when the saving is above about 30% and the model has two or more years of guaranteed support left. Compare Electronic priced three models new and renewed on Amazon UK on 3 October 2026, then divided the renewed price by the years of Apple's minimum security support left:

Compare Electronic's new vs renewed iPhone table (Amazon UK, 3 October 2026)

iPhone 17 256GB£899.00£775.00£124.00 (13.8%)September 20304£193.75

The renewed iPhone 16 is the sweet spot: the largest cash saving and the lowest cost per guaranteed year, £166.67 against £263.10 for the same phone bought new. The renewed iPhone 17 saves only £124.00, 13.8%, for a phone with a used battery. Apple's own refurbished store charged £569 for an iPhone 15 and £659 for an iPhone 16 on 23 September 2026, so its new battery and shell cost £159 to £209 more than Amazon Renewed.

Is a refurbished iPhone as good as a new one?

A refurbished iPhone performs the same as a new one, because the chip, cameras and display are identical; the differences are the battery, the cosmetic condition and possibly some parts. Apple Certified Refurbished closes even those gaps: Apple states that refurbished iOS devices “come with new battery and outer shell”, after full functional testing, with its standard one-year limited warranty.

Every other seller refurbishes to a grade. The iPhone must work fully, but the battery is the original one at 80% or more of its capacity, the frame can show marks on lower grades, and a replaced screen or battery may not be an Apple part. Those three points are what the checks below are for. The wider trade-off across laptops, tablets and consoles is in New vs renewed vs refurbished tech UK.

Is a refurbished iPhone safe to buy?

A refurbished iPhone is safe to buy from a UK seller that gives a warranty and checks the IMEI. All the sellers in the parent guide give at least 12 months of cover, and Back Market states that it checks every IMEI against blacklists and that its devices are “not locked, stolen, or fraudulently sourced”.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies on top of any warranty: a refurbished iPhone must be of satisfactory quality and as described, a fault can be rejected for a full refund within 30 days, and a fault that appears within six months is presumed to have been there at delivery. The Act covers traders, not private sellers, so a private sale carries far weaker protection against Activation Lock or a stolen phone.

Seller checks reduce the risk but do not remove it. Back Market lists its checks as IMEI blacklist status, carrier lock status and whether mechanical parts are genuine or compatible; giffgaff runs a 30-point health check; Apple replaces the battery and shell outright. The buyer's checklist below repeats the checks that matter, because the 30-day right to reject closes whatever the seller's process.

What do refurbished grades and battery minimums mean?

Grades describe cosmetic condition only; every grade must be fully working. The battery floor matters more than the grade, and it differs by seller:

Refurbished iPhone seller terms (published by each seller, October 2026)
SellerBatteryWarrantyGrades
Apple Certified RefurbishedNew battery and outer shell1 year (Apple)One grade
Amazon Renewed80% minimum1 year (Amazon Renewed Guarantee)Excellent, Good, Acceptable
Amazon Renewed Premium90% minimum1 year (Amazon Renewed Guarantee)Premium only
Back Market80% minimum, 90% on Premium1 year, 30-day free returnsFair, Good, Excellent, Premium
giffgaff80% minimum12 months minimum, longer on higher gradesLike new to Good
Music Magpie80% minimum12 monthsPristine, Very Good, Good

Back Market's Premium grade also guarantees genuine manufacturer parts. Music Magpie says any battery under 80% is replaced with a new one, and giffgaff runs a 30-point health check before sale. A hairline mark on a Good grade disappears under a case; a battery at 80% does not improve.

What battery health is acceptable on a refurbished iPhone?

80% is the acceptable minimum and 90% or more is worth paying for. Battery health appears under Settings, Battery, Battery Health as Maximum Capacity. An iPhone 16 that Apple rated at 22 hours of video playback when new manages about 17.6 hours at 80%.

Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to keep 80% of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, and iPhone 15 models at 1,000 cycles. An iPhone 15 or 16 at 85% therefore has far more life left than an iPhone 13 at 85%, which is another reason to favour the newer refurbished models.

What should you check on a refurbished iPhone?

Check eight things within 30 days of delivery, while the Consumer Rights Act 2015 still guarantees a full refund for a fault. Compare Electronic's checklist gives where to look, what a pass looks like and what to do if it fails:

Apple describes Activation Lock as a feature that turns on automatically with Find My and is “designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone”; an iPhone that asks for a previous owner's Apple Account at setup is still tied to that account. CheckMEND reports whether an IMEI is recorded as lost, stolen, subject to an insurance claim or blocked by a network. Ofcom banned UK networks from selling locked phones from December 2021, so network locks now turn up mainly on older iPhones.

How do you check for non-genuine parts?

Settings, General, About shows Parts and Service History on iOS 15.2 and later. Apple marks a part “Genuine” when it is an Apple part fitted with Apple's process and “Unknown” when it is non-genuine or not working as expected. On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 18, it also flags a “Used” part taken from another iPhone.

  • iPhone 12 and later: battery, display, logic board, front camera and rear cameras.
  • iPhone 11: battery and display.
  • iPhone XR, XS and SE (2nd and 3rd generation): battery only.

An Unknown part can still work, but it is not what Apple fitted, and an iPhone listed with genuine parts that shows one can be returned as not as described.

How long will a refurbished iPhone get iOS updates?

Apple commits to at least five years of security updates from each iPhone's first supply, so an iPhone 15 is covered to at least September 2028, an iPhone 16 to September 2029 and an iPhone 17 to September 2030. That minimum is the figure in the price table above.

Apple's record is longer than the minimum. iOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, runs on the same iPhones as iOS 26, back to the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation), according to MacRumors: seven years of major updates for an iPhone 11 bought in 2019. The newest Apple Intelligence and Siri features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, which favours the renewed iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 over the iPhone 15.

On that record, a refurbished iPhone 15 bought today could plausibly receive major iOS versions into 2030, and an iPhone 16 into 2031. Only the five-year minimum is a commitment, so the cost per year in the price table uses the minimum, and every figure in it is likely to fall in practice.

Which refurbished iPhone is worth buying?

The renewed iPhone 16 128GB at £500.00 is the best value, matching the pick in the parent guide. The renewed iPhone 15 128GB at £360.00 is the cheapest worthwhile refurbished iPhone, with USB-C, the Dynamic Island and a 48 MP camera, but only two guaranteed years left. The renewed iPhone 15 Pro 128GB at £499.00 costs £1 less than the renewed iPhone 16 and adds a 120 Hz display and 3x telephoto, at the cost of a year of guaranteed support. The iPhone 15 Pro also has 8 GB of RAM, which Apple requires for Apple Intelligence, and a titanium frame.

Who should buy a new iPhone instead?

Two buyers should buy new. The first wants the newest model: the renewed iPhone 17 256GB at £775.00 saves only £124.00 on a new iPhone 17 256GB at £899.00. The second keeps a phone five years or more: only a new iPhone gives the full support window and a fresh battery. A third buyer, who wants a new battery and shell on an older Pro model, should use Apple Certified Refurbished rather than Amazon Renewed.

Verdict

A refurbished iPhone is worth it when it saves 30% or more, has a battery at 80% or above and at least two years of Apple support left, and comes from a seller with 12 months of cover. The renewed iPhone 16 128GB at £500.00 meets all four and saves £289.31 on new. Check Activation Lock, the IMEI, battery health and Parts and Service History in the first 30 days. Frequently asked questions

Is a refurbished iPhone worth it?

Yes, for most UK buyers, as long as the iPhone has at least two years of Apple's guaranteed security support left. A renewed iPhone 16 128GB costs £500.00 on Amazon UK at the time of writing (October 2026), £289.31 or 36.7% less than a new iPhone 16 at £789.31. The saving shrinks on the newest models: a renewed iPhone 17 256GB saves 13.8%.

Is a refurbished iPhone as good as a new one?

An Apple Certified Refurbished iPhone is as good as new in every part a buyer touches, because Apple fits a new battery and outer shell and gives a one-year warranty. Other refurbished iPhones work like new but carry a used battery, usually at 80% or more of its original capacity, and may have cosmetic marks or non-Apple replacement parts.

Is a refurbished iPhone safe to buy?

Yes, from a UK seller with a warranty. Apple, Amazon Renewed, Back Market, giffgaff and Music Magpie all give at least 12 months of cover, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 adds a 30-day right to reject faults. The real risks are Activation Lock, a blacklisted IMEI and non-genuine parts, which a buyer can check in Settings and on CheckMEND.

What should I check on a refurbished iPhone?

Check six things in the first 30 days: no Activation Lock at setup, battery health under Settings, Battery, the Parts and Service History under Settings, General, About, the IMEI on CheckMEND, a SIM from another network, and every camera, speaker and Face ID. A failed check is grounds to reject the iPhone under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

What battery health should a refurbished iPhone have?

A refurbished iPhone should have at least 80% battery health, the floor at Amazon Renewed, Back Market, giffgaff and Music Magpie, and 90% or more on Amazon Renewed Premium and Back Market Premium. Apple says iPhone 15 batteries are designed to keep 80% of their capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles, against 500 cycles for iPhone 14 and earlier.

How do I know if a refurbished iPhone has non-genuine parts?

Open Settings, General, About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple marks each replaced part as Genuine or Unknown, and on iPhone 15 and later with iOS 18 or newer it also flags a Used part taken from another iPhone. iPhone 12 and later report the battery, display, logic board and cameras; iPhone 11 reports the battery and display.

How long will a refurbished iPhone get iOS updates?

Apple guarantees at least five years of security updates from a model's first supply, so an iPhone 15 is covered to September 2028, an iPhone 16 to September 2029 and an iPhone 17 to September 2030. Apple's record runs longer: iOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, still supports the iPhone 11 from 2019.

Is a refurbished iPhone locked to a network?

Rarely. Ofcom banned UK networks from selling locked phones from December 2021, and the main UK refurbishers sell iPhones unlocked, but an older iPhone can still carry a lock. Settings, General, About should show No SIM restrictions next to Carrier Lock, and a SIM from a different network should connect and make a call.
