Curved monitors suit close, wide setups and immersive PC games. Flat monitors are easier for competitive aim, consoles, design work and shared viewing. Samsung Odyssey G5 34-inch is a 34-inch 21:9 VA display at 165Hz with a 1000R curve; Amazon UK listed it at £299.00 on 27 October 2026. The flat Philips Evnia 32M2N8900 was £445.93 on Amazon UK in the same snapshot.

Samsung's official Odyssey G5 specification lists 1000R curvature and 21:9 resolution. Philips lists the flat Evnia as 31.5-inch 4K 16:9. A curve does not make the image wider by itself; the G5's extra width comes from its 21:9 aspect ratio.

What does a curved monitor radius mean?

The R number describes a theoretical circle radius in millimetres. A smaller number means a tighter curve: 1000R is more curved than 1500R. Samsung Odyssey G5 34-inch is 1000R, placing the user inside a curve designed to wrap the 34-inch ultrawide field around a close desk position. A 1500R screen would have a gentler curve. Flat displays have no radius.

Curvature is most noticeable on wide screens. The edges of a 34-inch 21:9 panel sit farther from the viewer than its centre, so a curve can bring them nearer to a consistent viewing distance. The effect depends on how far back the user sits. At the intended distance, the screen can feel enveloping; too close, and a tight 1000R curve may feel exaggerated or make it harder to glance at the full panel.

A curved screen does not add pixel count, refresh rate or panel contrast. Samsung Odyssey G5 is a 3440 by 1440, 165Hz VA monitor; its 1000R geometry is a physical viewing choice. A flat 32-inch 4K monitor such as Philips Evnia is higher resolution at 3840 by 2160 and about 140 pixels per inch, while the LG ultrawide is about 110 ppi. The pixel and shape differences are separate decisions.

Is a curved monitor better for gaming?

Curved ultrawide can make supported PC games more immersive by extending the view horizontally. Samsung Odyssey G5 uses a 21:9 VA panel at 3440 by 1440 and 165Hz, so compatible racing or open-world games can fill more of the peripheral view. The 1000R curve brings the edges towards the player. It remains a matter of taste: some users prefer a flat panel's consistent geometry, particularly at 27 inches or smaller.

Competitive FPS is a different trade. A flat 16:9 panel keeps the entire game view at a similar distance and is easy to scan with the eyes. Some competitive games restrict ultrawide field of view or add side bars, so a 21:9 monitor does not guarantee a wider competitive advantage. Check the game-specific rules. A high refresh rate such as 240Hz or 360Hz matters more than curvature for players who prioritise motion clarity.

Consoles send 16:9 images. PS5 supports standard 4K 120Hz over HDMI 2.1, and 21:9 displays may show black bars on the sides rather than use the full width. The picture can still look good, but much of the ultrawide panel sits unused. A flat 16:9 monitor such as Philips Evnia or MSI MPG 322UR makes better use of a console's output. For a PC and console combination, decide which device is used most.

For films and streaming, the format matters alongside curvature. Cinema content often uses a wide aspect ratio that fits 21:9 better than 16:9, while broadcast, console menus and many online videos use 16:9. On a 21:9 display those formats can show black bars at the sides. A curved 16:9 screen does not solve black bars, and a flat ultrawide still provides a wider movie image. Choose the aspect ratio first, then decide whether the curve suits your viewing position.

Which shape suits a desk and daily work?

A 34-inch 21:9 monitor is about 80cm wide and Odyssey G5 is nearly 29cm deep with its stand. The curve and broad image need desk space. It can replace two monitors for a timeline, spreadsheet or browser and document side by side, without a central bezel. The panel has 3440 horizontal pixels but 1440 vertical pixels, so it gives width rather than the extra vertical workspace of 4K.

A flat 32-inch 16:9 screen is roughly 71cm wide and 40cm tall. Its vertical resolution of 2160 pixels can show more lines of a document or code window. The flat surface is practical if the screen is shared between two people or used for colour-sensitive tasks. Philips Evnia and MSI MPG 322UR are both 31.5-inch flat 4K OLED displays at 240Hz.

For work, aspect ratio and panel type may matter more than curve. The ultrawide is convenient for multiple windows; its VA LCD panel does not use an OLED subpixel layout. A 32-inch 4K screen has higher pixel density, which can make text appear smoother. Bright office use and static windows also make OLED care and warranty worth reviewing. Our OLED text-fringing guide explains the trade-offs.

Measure the desk with the monitor stand, keyboard and speakers in place. A monitor arm may reduce stand depth, but it needs a suitable VESA pattern and enough load capacity. Curved screens can require a deeper desk to keep the full display within a comfortable viewing angle. Flat monitors are simpler to position on shallow desks or mount close to a wall. The user's posture and eye line matter more than the curve label.

Which curved or flat monitor should you buy?

Choose Samsung Odyssey G5 34-inch for PC ultrawide gaming, its 1000R curve and 165Hz refresh. Amazon UK listed it at £299.00 on 27 October 2026. Choose Philips Evnia 32M2N8900 for flat 4K 240Hz QD-OLED at £445.93. MSI MPG 322UR at £848.99 adds 98W USB-C, KVM and DisplayPort 2.1a.

Frequently asked questions

Is a curved or flat monitor better for gaming?

A curved monitor can feel more immersive at close range, especially in 21:9 ultrawide games. A flat monitor suits esports, consoles and shared viewing because straight lines stay regular and the screen is easier to position. Choose according to size, aspect ratio, desk distance and the games you play.

What does 1000R mean on a curved monitor?

1000R describes a curve with a theoretical radius of 1,000 millimetres. A smaller R number means a tighter curve. Samsung Odyssey G5 34-inch uses a 1000R curve on a 34-inch 21:9 VA display. It is designed for a close desk setup; viewing comfort still depends on distance and preference.

Is a curved monitor better for FPS games?

Not automatically. Competitive FPS players often prefer a flat 24- or 27-inch screen because the whole view is easy to scan and the panel does not bend straight lines. Some use curved ultrawide for single-player shooters, but online games may restrict 21:9 field of view.

Are curved monitors good for PS5?

They work, but PS5 outputs a 16:9 image. On an ultrawide 21:9 screen, the console may display black bars at the sides rather than use the full panel. A flat 16:9 monitor is simpler for console play and standard video.

Does a curved monitor reduce eye strain?

There is no guarantee. A curve can keep the edges of a wide display at a more consistent viewing angle, but comfort depends on distance, brightness, posture and eyesight. A tight 1000R curve can feel unusual to some users. Adjust the screen and take breaks rather than relying on curvature alone.

Is 1000R or 1500R more curved?

1000R is more curved than 1500R because its theoretical radius is smaller. Samsung Odyssey G5 34-inch has a 1000R curve. Flat screens have no radius. A tighter curve can create stronger wraparound at the intended viewing distance, though personal preference and desk distance determine comfort.
