How to choose mechanical keyboards
Mechanical keyboards use individual switches under each keycap to deliver tactile, clicky, or linear feedback. The category covers everything from 60 percent compact boards to full-size with dedicated number pads. Premium custom builds use hot-swappable PCBs, gasket-mounted plates, and pre-lubed switches.
Switch type
Linear switches like Cherry MX Red, Gateron Yellow, and Kailh Speed Silver glide without tactile feedback. Tactile switches like Cherry MX Brown and Gateron Brown have a soft bump. Clicky switches like Cherry MX Blue and Kailh Box White add an audible click. The choice is personal preference; none is faster than the others in measured input.
Layout and size
Full-size keyboards include a number pad. Tenkeyless layouts remove the number pad for desk space. 75 percent and 65 percent layouts compress the arrow cluster. 60 percent layouts remove the function row. The Keychron Q1 series and the Glorious GMMK Pro are popular 75 percent builds.
Hot-swap and build quality
Hot-swappable PCBs accept new switches without soldering. Gasket-mounted plates flex slightly under typing pressure for a softer feel. Premium boards use aluminium top cases and polycarbonate or aluminium plates. The Wooting 80HE adds analogue Hall-effect switches for game inputs.
Keycaps
PBT keycaps resist shine and feel more textured than ABS. Cherry profile, OEM profile, and SA profile differ in height and curvature. Doubleshot legends never wear off because the legend is moulded plastic, not printed paint.
