How to choose 1440p monitors

1440p monitors render 2560 by 1440 pixels and sit between Full HD and 4K. The category is the sweet spot for desktop gaming on mid-range graphics cards. Leading panels combine IPS or OLED technology with refresh rates from 144 Hz to 480 Hz.

Panel technology

WOLED and QD-OLED panels deliver perfect blacks and 0.03 ms pixel response. IPS panels reach higher peak brightness and lower price points. The LG UltraGear 27GS95QE uses a 1440p WOLED panel at 240 Hz. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 uses a QD-OLED panel.

Refresh rate

144 Hz is the entry point for gaming 1440p panels. 240 Hz is standard on premium gaming monitors. 480 Hz is now available on the LG UltraGear 27GX700-B. Higher refresh rates improve motion clarity in competitive titles.

HDR and brightness

VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certifies OLED panels with 400 nits peak. DisplayHDR 1000 covers Mini-LED LCDs with 1000 nits peak. Higher peak brightness improves HDR highlights and bright-room visibility.

Connectivity

DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression handles 1440p at 240 Hz with HDR. HDMI 2.1 brings the same to consoles. Some monitors include a built-in USB-C hub with Power Delivery for laptop docking.
