How to choose ultrawide monitors

Ultrawide monitors use a 21:9 or 32:9 aspect ratio instead of the standard 16:9. They replace dual-monitor setups with a single curved panel. Productivity buyers value the extra horizontal canvas for code, spreadsheets, and timelines. Gaming buyers value the cinematic field of view in racing and flight simulators. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9, the LG UltraGear 39GS95UE, and the Dell U4025QW lead the category.

Aspect ratio and resolution

21:9 ultrawides ship at 2560×1080, 3440×1440, or 5120×2160 (5K2K). 32:9 super-ultrawides ship at 5120×1440 or 7680×2160. Higher pixel density preserves text sharpness when the panel is large enough to compete with multiple desktop monitors.

Panel technology

QD-OLED ultrawides from Samsung Display reach the brightest highlights in HDR. WOLED ultrawides from LG Display are flatter and cheaper to manufacture in 34-inch and 39-inch sizes. Mini-LED LCD options like the Dell U4025QW offer higher sustained brightness for office environments where matte coating matters.

Curve

Curve radius is reported in millimetres. 1000R matches the curvature of the human eye and surrounds the user in a 34-inch panel. 1800R is a gentler curve for productivity. Flat ultrawides exist for editorial work where straight lines matter more than immersion.

Connectivity

DisplayPort 2.1 with Display Stream Compression carries 5K2K at 240 Hz with HDR. HDMI 2.1 brings the same to consoles, though most consoles do not output 21:9 natively. USB-C with Power Delivery up to 140 watts charges a connected MacBook while displaying the image, eliminating a second cable.
