Graphics Cards guide
How to choose graphics cards
Desktop graphics cards render games at high resolutions, accelerate AI workloads, and drive multiple monitors. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 dominates the high end. AMD Radeon RX 9000 competes at the mid range. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 is the fastest consumer graphics card available.
Memory and bandwidth
Video memory holds textures, frame buffers, and ray-tracing data. The RTX 5090 ships with 32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus. Memory bandwidth measures data throughput per second. Higher memory bandwidth supports higher resolutions and ray-traced lighting.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing simulates physical light bounces in real time. The NVIDIA RTX 50 series uses fourth-generation ray tracing cores. The AMD RX 9000 series uses second-generation RDNA 4 ray accelerators. Hardware ray tracing replaces precomputed lighting with dynamic global illumination, reflections, and shadows.
Upscaling
DLSS 4 on NVIDIA and FSR 4 on AMD render at lower internal resolution and upscale to the target output. Multi-frame generation on the RTX 50 series produces three additional frames for every native frame. Upscaling raises frame rates and reduces GPU load.
Power and connectors
The RTX 5090 has a 575 watt TDP and uses a 16-pin 12V-2x6 connector. The RTX 4080 Super has a 320 watt TDP. NVIDIA recommends a 1000 watt power supply for the RTX 5090 and an 850 watt supply for the RTX 4080 Super.
