4K Monitors guide

How to choose 4k monitors

4K monitors render 3840 by 2160 pixels and serve creative work, gaming, and high-density office layouts. The 27-inch and 32-inch sizes dominate the desktop market. Leading panel families include LG WOLED, Samsung QD-OLED, Dell IPS Black, and ASUS Mini-LED.

Panel technology

OLED panels emit light per pixel and produce perfect blacks. IPS panels use a backlight and reach higher peak brightness in HDR. Mini-LED panels divide the backlight into thousands of zones to approach OLED contrast. The LG UltraGear 32GS95UE uses a WOLED panel. The ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM uses a QD-OLED panel.

Refresh rate and response time

Refresh rate measures how many times the screen redraws per second. 144 Hz is the desktop standard. 240 Hz and above target competitive gaming. OLED panels produce 0.03 millisecond pixel response times. IPS panels typically respond in 1 to 4 milliseconds.

HDR and brightness

VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certifies OLED panels with 400 nits peak brightness. DisplayHDR 1000 certifies LCD panels with 1000 nits peak. Higher peak brightness improves visibility in bright rooms and the impact of HDR highlights.

Connectivity

DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression carries 4K at 144 Hz with HDR. HDMI 2.1 carries 4K at 120 Hz with variable refresh rate. USB-C with Power Delivery charges a connected laptop while displaying the image, and reduces cable count on a desk.
