Motherboards guide
How to choose motherboards
Motherboards connect the CPU, memory, storage, and expansion cards on a single printed circuit board. Chipset, VRM design, and rear I/O determine which features the system can support. AM5 boards pair with AMD Ryzen 9000 CPUs. LGA1851 boards pair with Intel Core Ultra 200S CPUs.
Form factor
ATX is the standard size at 305 mm by 244 mm. Micro-ATX measures 244 mm by 244 mm. Mini-ITX measures 170 mm by 170 mm. Smaller form factors accept fewer expansion cards and DIMM slots than full ATX.
VRM and power delivery
The Voltage Regulator Module supplies clean power to the CPU. High-end boards use 18 or more power phases for sustained overclocks. The ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E ships with an 18+2+2 phase VRM. The Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master ships with an 18+2+2 phase VRM.
Memory support
Most ATX boards offer four DIMM slots. AM5 boards officially support 192 GB across four DIMMs. LGA1851 boards officially support 192 GB across four DIMMs. Memory overclocking on flagship boards reaches DDR5-9200 with two-stick kits.
Expansion and storage
PCIe 5.0 x16 slots host the graphics card. Additional PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots accept the fastest NVMe SSDs. Mid-range boards offer one to two PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots. Flagship boards offer three or more.
