How to choose power supplies

Power supplies convert mains AC to the DC rails that feed every component in a desktop PC. Wattage, efficiency rating, modularity, and the ATX 3.1 standard with the 12V-2x6 connector are the buyer's main concerns in 2026. The Corsair RM1200x Shift, the Seasonic Vertex PX-1200, the be quiet! Dark Power Pro 13, and the ASUS ROG Thor 1200W Platinum lead the high-wattage market.

Wattage and headroom

Total wattage should exceed peak system draw by 20 to 30 percent. A system with an RTX 5090 (575 W) and a Ryzen 9 9950X3D (170 W) plus 100 W of fans, drives, and motherboard needs an 1000 W supply at minimum. Headroom keeps the supply running cool and quiet at typical loads.

Efficiency rating

80 Plus Gold supplies are 87 to 90 percent efficient at typical loads. 80 Plus Platinum reaches 89 to 92 percent. 80 Plus Titanium hits 90 to 94 percent. Higher efficiency means less waste heat and lower running cost. The price premium for Titanium over Gold pays back over years rather than months for most users.

ATX 3.1 and the 12V-2x6 connector

ATX 3.1 supplies provide the 12V-2x6 connector with up to 600 W of power on a single cable for the RTX 50 series. The 12V-2x6 connector replaces the 12VHPWR connector used on ATX 3.0 supplies and adds shorter sense pins to detect partial seating before applying full current.

Modular cabling

Fully modular supplies ship without permanently attached cables, allowing the user to install only the cables they need. Semi-modular supplies attach the 24-pin ATX and primary CPU cable permanently. Non-modular supplies are cheaper but force every cable into the case regardless of use.
