RAM guide
How to choose ram
Desktop memory kits feed the CPU with the data it needs to run programs. DDR5 is the current standard for AM5 and LGA1851 desktops. DDR4 still ships in budget builds. Speed, latency, and capacity together determine memory performance.
Speed and latency
Memory speed is reported in megatransfers per second. DDR5-6000 transfers 6000 million times per second. CAS latency measures the cycles a memory controller waits before returning data. DDR5-6000 CL30 outperforms DDR5-6400 CL36 in most workloads because total response time matters more than raw speed.
Capacity
Most modern desktops use 32 GB of memory in two 16 GB sticks. Content creators benefit from 64 GB or more for video editing, 3D rendering, and large datasets. Two-stick kits enable dual-channel operation and improve memory bandwidth over single-stick configurations.
XMP and EXPO
Intel XMP profiles store factory-tuned timings on the memory module. AMD EXPO profiles do the same on AM5 platforms. Enabling the profile in BIOS unlocks the rated speed. Without the profile, memory runs at the JEDEC default of 4800 megatransfers per second.
Heatspreader and RGB
Aluminium heatspreaders pull heat away from the memory chips. RGB lighting on Corsair Vengeance, G.Skill Trident Z5, and Kingston Fury Beast modules adds visual appeal. Tall heatspreaders may interfere with large air coolers in cramped builds.
